Cultural and National Identity:
Through Stages
I started this project with the idea of exploring identity. From the start, I was constantly comparing both sides of my identity: national and cultural. It was hard for me to separate them when exploring the topic, so I wanted to juxtapose them to dive into what it meant for me. In the end, I created this project to explore the duality of identity through my scope as an Asian American through the different stages of life: childhood, adolescence and adulthood.
Identifying as Asian American is something that has a large impact in my life and this project brings light to that. I have researched different artist to explore the topic of identity. In the end, I created an eight panel zine completely out of textiles. It's meant to be a sort of childlike storybook for other Asian Americans like me. Each page turn represents a different stage in life, with one side showing cultural identity and one side showing national identity.
